Making a kaftan does not start at the sewing machine, but with a good design. The fabric, the desired movement, and the occasion together determine what the final result will look like. Below, you will discover the most important steps of the craft, so that you can make a better choice when you buy or have a kaftan altered.
1. Choose the right fabric
For a festive kaftan, satin, velvet, brocade, and flowing crepe are popular. A lightweight viscose or silky fabric works well for a summer party. Look not only at shine but also at weight, transparency, and wrinkle resistance. A heavy fabric requires a sturdy lining; a slippery fabric sometimes needs an anti-slip layer at the shoulders.
2. Take measurements accurately
Measure your bust, waist, hips, shoulder width, arm length, and the desired total length. Take into account the shoes you will be wearing. A kaftan should provide room to sit and walk. For a takchita, the ratio between the underdress and the top layer is also determined. An experienced tailor checks the measurements again before cutting.
3. Create the pattern and cut
The pattern determines the shoulder line, sleeve shape, and amount of volume. Lay the fabric on a flat surface and check the grain. With velvet, velour, and fabrics with a print, all pattern pieces must follow the same direction. Leave extra seam allowance at the side seams and the hem; adjusting is easier than adding fabric.
4. Sew the base
The shoulder seams are closed first, followed by the side seams, sleeves, and neckline. Try on the dress in between with the desired belt. This allows you to see if the waist falls nicely and if the length is comfortable. A neat interior with even seams is just as important as the exterior, especially for a dress that is worn often.
5. Add sfifa, buttons, and embroidery
Sfifa is a decorative trim applied along the front opening, sleeves, or hem. Aqad buttons give the kaftan its recognizable look. Embroidery and sequins are lightly marked first so that the pattern remains symmetrical. With handwork, an even tension is important: too tight pulls the fabric, too loose and the motif loses its shape.
6. Finish with a belt
A belt completes the look and gives the dress extra structure. Choose a narrow belt for a modern, clean line or a richly decorated belt for a wedding. In our kaftan belt collection, you will find various ways to accentuate the waist.
